The name derives from a legend in which the United States cavalry squared off in battle with Apache warriors on a mountain overlooking what is now Superior, Arizona, in the 1870s. Rather than face defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths. The tears shed by their surviving tribe members are said to have turned to stone upon hitting the ground. It is said that whoever owns an Apache tear will never have to cry again, for it helps us to grieve our losses and move on.
